Resistant Materials

The course is concerned with the properties and application of a range of materials. Pupils undertake a progression of structured tasks that develop practical skills in wood, metal and plastics as well as theoretical understanding of working practices. This includes use of computer aided design to enhance project work and an appreciation of industrial contexts

Pupils are led toward completing an extended design project that demonstrates their understanding and skills in designing, planning and fabricating an artefact to meet a specified need. Topics that may be chosen for coursework include storage, innovative devices for personal use and mechanical toys.

Assessment is by completion of an extended design project and by sitting two terminal papers. Pupils will be required to contribute towards materials used for their practical work.
