PE Curriculum Overview 2012-13

The grid below gives an overview of the curriculum for this academic year.

Year 7

During Year 7 students follow a programme where they will be taught the basis of Invasion games, Net wall games, Gymnastics, Dance, Health Related Fitness, Athletics and Striking and Fielding games. We teach the students the basic skills and tactics for these games, building on any past experiences they may have gained.

Year 8

The students in Year 8 are taught the same areas of experience as in Year 7, with a particular focus of developing their skills and knowledge. They will be asked to focus on some areas of coaching and self-management, including leading warm ups for small groups.

Year 9

In Year 9 students follow a programme which allows further skill development and creates a sense of independence. In a range of sports and activities students will be asked to lead warm ups and parts of the lesson, and encouraged to analyse their own performance and that of their team, developing appropriate feedback. Within PE, students take part in a 6 week block of Dance lessons with a specialist Dance teacher. This is an introduction to GCSE Dance. Dance for Year 9 students begin to look at how to improve general fitness, posture, co-ordination, spatial awareness, confidence, and creativity.

Year 10

BTEC Sport: Students are taught a range of topic areas and units through a series of theory lessons and then through the practical application of the skills they have learnt. There is no exam for this subject, so all assessment is carried out by the teaching staff and through the setting of home learning and course work.

GCSE PE: Students are assessed on their practical performance in 4 sports, where they will receive a score out of 10. Students also follow a theory strand where they learn about the role of the bones muscles and joints, the practical and theoretical application of health related fitness and the key body systems. There is a written exam at the end of the course, and there is a course work element to this course too.

Core PE: Students follow a programme of participation where a variety of sports are offered throughout the year. In the summer term all students have the opportunity to follow the Sports Leaders Award, or to continue with a participation element.
