    Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading programme that supports and monitors reading progress. All of Year 7 and 8 take a Star Test that measures the students reading level. The star test will determine what range of book level students should read within. This is called the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Each student will have a ZPD level e.g. 3.4-5.6.

Star Tests will be carried out for all Year 7 and 8 students in the first few weeks of every term to set their ZPD level. Students then pick a book to read within their ZPD range. All the AR Books in the Library have a red sticker on the spine that tells them the level of the book. Students need to check that it is within their ZPD range, we suggest they start at the lower end of their ZPD level and then move up their scale if they do well on the quiz. When finished they take a short online quiz (this can be done during library lessons or at home) to measure how much of the book they understood. The pass mark is 80%.

Students should be aiming to read and quiz on a least one book every half term. Students who achieve 100% on an AR Quiz will have their name put on the AR 100 Percenters board and every half term will receive a prize.

Students who achieve 80% or more will have a postcard sent home to allow parents and carers to see just how well they are doing!
