The Notley library aims to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning. Throughout the year, the library holds a number of themed activities and events to promote literature, reading and a passion and enthusiasm for learning.
Our extra-curricular activities cover a wide range of subjects, topics and themes; from Science and Maths, to multicultural and historical events. Events from previous years have included “Around the World in 80 Minutes”, “Shakespeare Week”, “The Brain Gym” and an exploration of world water issues in “World Toilet Day”, in conjunction with “Water Aid”.
The library regularly promotes wider reading and encourages students to explore classic and contemporary literature through special events and activities. In September 2019 we celebrated the wonderful world of Roald Dahl and launched our events programme with a whole day of competitions and activities themed around the works of Roald Dahl, to celebrate National Roald Dahl Day. In November we promoted reading for pleasure through a special half price Scholastic Book Fair and at Christmas we had 3 days of festive themed fun – including a Christmas Craft Day, a Christmas themed Games Day and a raft of Christmas competitions.
One of our key events in our calendar is World Book Day. This is a celebration of authors, books and, most importantly, reading. In fact, it is the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. This event is celebrated annually at Notley library with new competitions and quizzes every year.
This year we will be starting our events calendar with the launch of the “BookBuzz” programme for Year 7 students. Every student in Year 7 will have the opportunity to choose a FREE Book from a specially selected collection of 17 titles. So, whether you are hooked on horror, fanatical about fantasy or hankering for some humour, there will be something for everyone! “Bookbuzz” will be funded by the library and students will receive their FREE book as a Christmas present from the school library.
The library is also pleased to announce that during the Autumn term 2020, we are launching a new 2 weekly library newsletter, packed full of book themed activities, competitions, features, articles, and fun! The newsletter will be sent to all students via email, and everyone who takes part in an activity or competition will have the opportunity to win prizes and will receive House points.
Other events planned for later in the academic year 2020 – 2021 include testing students’ team working skills in our “Crystal Maze” style challenge and the “Notley Treasure Hunt”.
The Notley library encourages all year groups to take part in the events. The activities are designed to encourage students to actively engage with the world around them, to explore new subjects and topics and, most importantly, to have fun!
Who said the library is boring? Certainly not our library—keep in touch!
