Mathematics Faculty Overview

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Students should make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.

The Mathematics Faculty has a team of highly qualified specialist teachers. Faculty leadership is shared amongst four staff; a Faculty Leader and three Assistant Faculty leaders.

At Key Stage 3 and 4 all students have 6 or 7 hours of Mathematics per fortnight. Students are loosely set according to their ability. Students are regularly assessed and setting is reviewed termly to ensure all students are placed in classes that provide appropriate levels of access and challenge.

We firmly believe in the importance of home learning to ensure students develop the ability to retain, recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately and become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics. Students at KS3 are issued with a mymaths homework book and students at KS4 have their own copy of the Edexcel GCSE practice book, all of which mirror the classroom texts. At all levels, students have access to which can be used as a revision aid or as home learning. We also recommend that students use SAM learning and BBC bitesize to revise topics in which they feel less confident.

We offer a lunchtime drop in Maths club everyday which is hugely popular. Students can come and complete homework, get one to one help with work or just come and enjoy doing Maths in an informal way through puzzles, games and other activities.
GCSE Statistics is also offered as an additional GCSE option in Year 10 and has consistently produced results above the national average.

Mathematics is also offered at Key Stage 5. Braintree Sixth Form has a Subject Group Leader responsible for Mathematics & ICT. Students can study Mathematics at AS/A2, Further Maths AS/A2 and International Baccalaureate courses at Higher, Standard and Maths Studies levels.
