On the 20th and 21st February, Happening History paid a visit to Notley. They provided an engaging, hands on revision session for the whole cohort of History students within years 10 and 11. The content covered gave students the opportunity to revisit some of the material that will be included in their Paper 1 ‘Medicine Through Time’ exam. For some of our students, the session also meant dressing up as either a character from the Middle Ages or as one of the Four Humours – something people once believed needed to be in balance for your body to be healthy. Imaginative props were added to show, in detail, how the system worked. The most gruesome part was when the group produced real leeches which would have been used for bloodletting and some very scary surgical instruments.

The students got the opportunity to consider whether they would have chosen to be treated by a wisewoman of the time or an educated physician. Some students even reflected upon their own health today and how their specific needs would have been met at the time, provoking a great conversation with the staff from Happening History. A great, productive revision session was had by all, and it proved really useful in preparing the year 11s for their upcoming exams by bringing the topic to life.
