On Thursday 28 February 2019, the school once again became host to the visiting Colchester Food Roadshow, where our Year 10 Food students witnessed chef Martin Fordham demonstrate some of the more complex skills needed to deliver high quality dishes to restaurant customers.

Year 13 Trip to New York and Washington

At 2.15am on Thursday 14 February, nineteen Year 13 students met to travel to Heathrow Airport to start our American adventure. In the week that followed, the group visited two cities and walked over 60 miles.

Rock of Ages, the Musical

Back in the Summer term, we auditioned some wonderfully talented students for our musical, Rock of Ages and they were so brilliant that we decided to keep them all in the cast! Most of those students stayed dedicated to the creation of this performance and spent 5 months memorising lines, understanding the plot, getting to know their characters, as well as remembering stage directions, learning song lyrics and harmonies. On 27 and 28 February 2019, we were all very excited that ‘show time’ had finally arrived!

Brilliant club project visit to goldsmiths for graduation ceremony

On Friday 1 March 2019, eighteen Year 9 students visited Goldsmiths, part of the University of London, to graduate the Brilliant Club Scholar’s programme that they have been working towards since November. The students have worked with a Phd tutor, in small groups, for six weeks on a project based around “The Art of Essay Writing”, meeting once a week to cover topics that they wouldn’t usually encounter in school and have written an impressive 2,000 word essay as a result.

On Monday 4 February 2019, Year 8 students watched a presentation from the Essex Youth Service, who have worked in partnership with AlterEgo and have commissioned a drama piece to raise awareness of gangs and County Lines.

Apprenticeship Fair

On Thursday 7 March 2019, all Year 10 students were given the opportunity to visit the STEM Innovation Centre at Colchester Institute, Braintree Campus. As part of the careers curriculum provided in school, students were able to visit an apprenticeship fair, hosted by The Braintree Learning Partnership, comprising of seven schools and other learning providers.

Red Nose Day - Non Uniform Day on Friday 15 March 2019

The school will be having a non-uniform day on Friday 15 March 2019 to raise money for Red Nose Day and our house charities. 

Students will be asked to make a £1 donation, but if they wish to contribute more they may do so. If you would like your child to bring in a contribution from you this would be acceptable also. There will also be a range of activities arranged for students to take part in, so we recommend that students bring a small amount of change with them.

Bethlem Museum

On Tuesday 26 February 2019, 40 A Level Psychology students took the opportunity to visit Bethlem Museum of the Mind. The museum offered a glance of the longest-running mental health institution in the world. While at one time it was known as Bedlam, a repository of the mentally ill of London, Bethlem Royal Hospital is a world leader in the treatment of both minor and severe mental disorders.

The Humanities Faculty took 50 Year 8 students to visit the Karamsar Gurdwara in Ilford on 25 February 2019. The gurdwara staff were incredibly welcoming and informative.

Chinese New Year

On Tuesday 5 February 2019, the catering team at Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form celebrated the Chinese New Year with a menu selection of Chinese chicken wraps and crackers, a lovely Chinese chicken curry and freshly stir fried vegetables with noodles in hoi sin sauce.

Mr Wishart is a colleague who gives up his time selflessly, both after school and during school holidays, for the benefit of students. In recent years, Mr Wishart has attended residential PE trips, sporting fixtures and run extra-curricular clubs.

On 14 February 2019, 36 of us boarded a luxury coach leading us to Austria. We would spend the next 21 exhausting hours, except the 2 hours we got to sit on a ferry, watching Mr Rowe’s favourite films – Chalet Girl being his most favourite*.

Game of Our Own Workshop

On Tuesday 5 March 2019, a group of Year 8 and Year 9 girls went to Harlow Leisure Zone, to take part in a Game of Our Own workshop, run by the Youth Sport Trust in partnership with the Football Association. The aim of this programme was to give students the tools and personal skills needed to come back to school and share their passion for the game to promote girls’ football to students at Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form.

Maisie: Future Chef 2019

Year 8 student, Maisie Speller T12, entered a cooking competition that covers the UK - Future Chef. It allows students with a passion for cooking to expand and challenge themselves. On 14 February 2019, Maisie took part in the regional finals - meaning she was in the top 10 students for the whole of the south east of the country, with over 13,500 applicants.

MUN 2019

The Model United Nations (MUN) society at Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form has continued to grow this year. This is an extra-curricular group led by Braintree Sixth Form students, who this year have worked with a number of Year 11 students at Notley each week to develop their understanding of the MUN and to help them prepare for a conference.The Model United Nations gives students the chance to assume the role of a representative of countries which are part of the United Nations, researching issues of global importance, debating in committees and general assemblies and putting themselves in the shoes of world leaders.

On Wednesday 30 January 2019, the Year 10, 11 and 13 Drama students travelled to the Theatre Royal Stratford East, in London, to watch The Unreturning by Frantic Assembly. We left in the early evening and eventually, after some rush hour traffic, arrived in Stratford.

We were fortunate to welcome the graphic designer Gemma Smith to the Art Department on Wednesday 6 February. Gemma showed GCSE Graphic Communication and Art, Craft and Design students examples of her inspirational Graphic Design work which included illustration and film animation.

Essex Roadster Day 2019

Braintree Sixth Form hosted its annual Essex Roadster event on Friday 1 February 2019.  The event is run in conjunction with Essex County Council and local driving school providers.  The aim of the event is to heighten the awareness of road safety initiatives to our Year 12 students.
