From May 10th-14th it will beActivities Week at Notley!

This year will be the first year that Notley High has held an activities week, which focuses on developing personal, learning and thinking skills and will involve every student in the school. For the entire week, timetables are collapsed and students have the opportunity to experience a whole range of activities from enterprise to French boules, from Quidditch to personal safety training. Below is an overview of the week.

This week Mr Trott’s year 10 drama class went to Notley Green to deliver a workshop on bullying to the whole of year 4.  The year 10’s have been working hard for some weeks in order to prepare for this workshop and it definitely paid off!

On Saturday 6 March the Wind Band performed at St Mary’s Church in Bocking. We were asked by Mrs Comfort, one of the schools governors, if we could perform in the church to help raise money for church funds.

A helicopter, hundreds of banners, screaming staff, excited students and a really surreal afternoon… This week school was off for the afternoon as X factor finalist (and ex Notley student) Olly Murs and his mentor Simon Cowell visited Notley High.

On Tuesday 27th April 40 students and four staff from IES Foramontanos and IES San Vicente, two secondary schools located in Cantabria, Spain, visited Notley High School.

Members of the purple section of Notley’s Student Voice have joined forces with a local charity called  Hand in Hand in a project to support a rural school in Tanzania, Africa.

On Tuesday 2 March the Wind Band performed for the members of Gosfield Senior Circle.  This was our first concert this year which showcased lots of new music.

It is with great pleasure that we can announce that the prizes for January, February and March can be awarded this month.  Having checked with the Jack Petchey Foundation, only one student per month can receive an award and as three students were involved in a charitable act, they have to be awarded a month each. The Jack Petchey Foundation is happy for this to happen.

Jack Petchey Achievement Award – November

We are pleased to announce that this month’s winner of the prestigious Jack Petchey Achievement Award is Charly Hutchinson of 11H. Charly is a member of the Army Cadet Force here in Braintree and as part of a 150 year celebration, the Force is sending 60 people from the UK to go to the Kingdom of Lesotho in South Africa. Charly is one of the 60 taking part; one of three from Essex chosen from two hundred applicants.

Year 8 girls raise money for charities

Leah Riley, Heidi Ellis of 8Y and Emily Davis of 8E rallied round and organised three weeks of fundraising for two charities - Cancer Research and Motor Neurone Disease.  Using their own initiative they collected money during assemblies, lunch times and afternoon registrations, but the biggest money-maker was the Race for Life day they planned.

The school will be supporting the Witham & Rivenhall branch of the Air Training Corps (ATC) in memory of Harry Robinson, who was a member of this branch and a student at Notley High School.

February half term 2010 saw yet another ski trip head out to Austria for the annual Notley High Ski trip. It was my tenth trip at Notley and quite honestly the best to date!

This year Unicef’s campaign is called ‘Day for Change 2010’ and focuses on changing lives for children in Mozambique by improving their health and education.  So, if you’re not going to wear uniform on Friday 5 February, please bring in £1 for the privilege and help make the lives of these children better.
